Changing of the guard
The biggest news this week is the Government reshuffle which saw Robert Jenrick ousted as Minister for Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) and the incoming Michael Gove having held previous positions in both Environment and Education take on the mantle.
I certainly don’t profess to be an expert in politics. What I do know, is a big job lays ahead of Michael Gove to fix our housing crisis and one that we all need him to succeed in.
Thousands of people are still affected by the cladding issue which reforms such as the Building Safety Bill aims to address. It will be Michael Gove’s responsibility to get these bills passed and to help leaseholders move on with their lives.
In addition, councils currently have a collective target to build 300,000 homes a year a target we are falling well short of with less than 250,000 homes built in 2019/2020. Before the announcement there were talks of new Planning Bills, that would free up land for development, being scrapped so we eagerly await to hear from the new minister around his plans for building & planning reform.
